MD5 Hash
MD5 outputs a 128-bit digest fast. Use it where protocols still mandate MD5 checksums or quick dedupe fingerprints—never depend on it against malicious collision attacks or for credential protection.
How to use
- Paste UTF-8 text or load a file you are allowed to process locally.
- Generate the digest in hex (note whether integrators expect lowercase or uppercase).
- Compare against an expected value from CI artifacts or mirrors; if it differs, check newline style, BOM, and whether binary versus text mode was used.
FAQ
- Is MD5 acceptable for passwords?
- No. MD5 is fast and broken for collision resistance—use Argon2id, bcrypt, or scrypt with per-user salts and tuned work factors for password hashing.
- Why do unrelated inputs show the same digest length?
- MD5 always emits 16 bytes rendered as 32 hex chars; security lies in the value, not the length. Compare full strings without accidental whitespace.
- Can CRLF versus LF change the hash?
- Yes—line endings alter bytes. Normalize newlines or hash raw bytes consistently with the producer when tracking down mismatches.
